There are moments in life that change the direction of everything that follows. Sometimes they come through personal loss. Sometimes through unexpected opportunities. Sometimes through watching another person face circumstances no one should have to endure alone. Provident Hearts Foundation was born from those moments. For as long as I can remember, serving others has been an important part of my life. From my childhood through adulthood, I have looked for opportunities to help people in whatever way I could. As my life and career developed, that desire to serve drew me toward professions where helping people through difficult circumstances was part of the work itself. While attending paramedic school, I worked in the hospital as a patient sitter and later as a telemetry technician in the Intensive Care Unit. After earning my paramedic certification, I joined the hospital’s ambulance service while continuing to serve in other hospital roles as needed. Those experiences placed me alongside people and families during some of the most uncertain and difficult moments of their lives. During those years, I learned something that has remained with me ever since. People rarely remember the exact words that were spoken during a crisis. They remember how they felt. They remember the uncertainty, the fear, the pain, and the anxiety that surrounded the experience. More importantly, they remember who showed up. They remember the people who simply sat beside them, listened, encouraged them, and reminded them that they were not facing those moments alone. Long after many of the details have faded, those expressions of love and support remain. Over the years, my wife Annette and I have tried to live our lives according to that principle. Our faith in Jesus Christ and His teachings has shaped how we view service. Through our church, our friendships, and our community, we have sought opportunities to care for others wherever we found them.

One lesson has become increasingly clear to us over the years: it is often the smallest expressions of love that leave the deepest impression. A visit. A conversation. A meal. A handmade gift. Simply being present. We all experience suffering, loss, disappointment, and hardship in different ways, but we are far more alike than we sometimes realize. When I experience those challenges in my own life, I find myself needing the same things that others need—love, encouragement, compassion, and the reassurance that someone cares. I have come to believe that if those small acts make such a difference in my life, they have the power to make a difference in the lives of others as well. As the years passed, another realization began to shape the direction of my life. For much of my career I pursued professional success in the same way many people do, always looking toward the next opportunity and the next promotion. Eventually I reached a point where I realized I wanted something different. I wanted greater control over my time so I could serve others more intentionally and according to the priorities I felt were most important.

After leaving corporate management and beginning my own business, I found myself praying often about the future. I wasn’t simply asking what job I should pursue next. I was asking what God wanted me to do with the experiences, abilities, and opportunities He had given me.

During that season of prayer and reflection, I became increasingly convinced that I was being called to establish a charitable foundation. An idea that had come to me years earlier—to provide handmade quilts to burn patients during one of the most difficult experiences of their lives—returned with unexpected clarity. What I had once thought was simply an interesting idea began to feel like something much more significant. As I have continued to follow that path, I have repeatedly found confirmation that this is the work I am supposed to be doing.

That journey is reflected in the name Provident Hearts Foundation.

The word provident means preparing wisely for the future. It speaks of stewardship, planning, and using today’s blessings to meet tomorrow’s needs. Combined with a heart for serving others, it represents the philosophy that guides everything we hope to accomplish.

I believe God has directed my path throughout my life, often in ways I did not recognize until much later. Looking back, experiences in emergency medicine, healthcare, business leadership, nonprofit work, and community service were not isolated chapters. They were preparing me for this one.

Provident Hearts Foundation exists to bring hope, dignity, and practical support to individuals and families facing crisis. We do that through three initiatives that work together to strengthen both individuals and the communities around them.

Quilts of Hope provides handmade quilts to people experiencing some of life’s most difficult moments. A quilt cannot change a diagnosis or erase a tragedy, but it can remind someone that they are seen, valued, and loved.

Housing Initiatives reflects our belief that stable housing creates the foundation from which people can rebuild their lives. Our long-term vision is to help individuals and families move toward greater stability and self-reliance through affordable housing and supportive services.

Community Preparedness recognizes that caring for our neighbors begins long before disaster strikes. By encouraging preparation, building partnerships, and organizing practical resources, we hope to help communities respond with compassion when crisis comes.

Although these initiatives are different, they share the same purpose.

They remind people that they do not have to face hardship alone.

Provident Hearts Foundation is still young. We have much to learn, many partnerships to build, and countless opportunities ahead of us. But our mission is not measured by the size of our organization. It is measured one person, one family, and one act of compassion at a time.

None of us can solve every problem our communities face.

But every one of us can make a difference in someone’s life.

Whether you are interested in volunteering, becoming a Community Partner, supporting our work financially, or simply learning more about our mission, I invite you to join us. Together, we can build stronger communities where people are prepared to care for one another, where hope is restored, and where dignity is never forgotten.

Because no one should face crisis alone.
